Kiyomizu Temple is a temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.
It’s a historical site, from the time before Heiankyo was moved to Kyoto, and it’s one of Kyoto’s few sacred places. Many worshippers and foreign tourists visit it throughout the year, and it’s registered with UNESCO’s World Heritage as a cultural property of old Kyoto.
The slope to Kiyomizu Temple is called Kiyomizu-do (Kiyomizu street). It has many souvenir shops for tourists on both sides of it.
The main building was rebuilt in 1633, and contains the famous “Kiyomizu no butai” (Kiyomizu stage). The first half of this building was built on the diagonal mountain surface without using a single nail.
When we make a big decision, we may say that we’re jumping from the Kiyomizu stage. In fact, some people actually jumped from this stage, but it is not that easy to die as 85% of them survived!
