Kendama… it’s something that any Japanese person has tried at least once in his or her life.
I was surprised to learn that Kendama isn’t actually a toy unique to Japan, but it has existed all over the world. In fact, it was brought to Japan in the Edo Period from China. I thought Kendama was Japanese traditional toy and had longer history… but it was not.
Recently, Kendama is quite popular in Japan, there are even competition programs broadcasted in TV. We can see rather stylish Kendama in stores, and I also hear that young boys and girls in the street are quite into it. Some even hang it from their neck as a fashion accessory.
Every year, an international competition is held n Japan. Once you see it, you may get so excited that you get sweat in your hands!
